London 2012 Paracyclist Smyth has freak accident at Majorca Training Camp

Cyclist, Enda Smyth, who was recently confirmed as a member of the Irish Paralympic Team for London 2012 was involved in a freak accident on Monday where he suffered a broken elbow. The accident happened on the squads rest day at a training camp in Majorca. On a gentle spin, Smyth’s front wheel became stuck in the grate of a roadside drain resulting in a fall onto his elbow. Smyth underwent surgery yesterday to repair the fracture. Initial signs are the operation was a success. A decision on Smyth’s participation in London 2012 will be made by the Paralympics Ireland medical team in the coming weeks. Speaking about his accident from Majorca, Enda Smyth said “This is a huge setback but I’m determined to get back on the bike as soon as I can. I will do everything in my power to confirm my fitness for the Games. I’d like to thank the medical staff at Clinica Juaneda for the super care and attention I’ve received.“ Smyth, was selected to compete in 3 track and 2 road events at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
