2012 Sport Sentiment Index shows how Ireland’s Paralympians moved the nation at London 2012 The annual Sport Sentiment Index (SSI), conducted by Pembroke Communications with Ignite Research, showed the huge strides made by Paralympic Sport in Ireland in terms of awareness and recognition over the course of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Team of the Year The independent nationwide representative survey of 1000 people featured Paralympic sport in many areas including the headline of ‘Team of the Year’. With 38% support, the team beat off stiff competition from Ireland’s Olympic Boxing Team (23%), Donegal footballers (14%) and the Leinster Rugby Team (11%). It is hoped that this sentiment will carry through to the public vote on Dec. 23rd for the RTE Sport Team of the Year Award which will be decided by phone/text poll during the end of year programme at 9:30pm. McKillop features in iconic sporting moment category Double gold medallist in the 800m & 1500m at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, Michael McKillop received his second gold medal from his mother, Catherine, courtesy of P&G. This moment captured live on Irish Television was voted the 3rd most memorable/iconic sporting moment of 2012. Katie Taylor boxing gold medal won this category followed by Rory McIllroy will the US PGA Title. Other categories Katie Taylor was also voted the winner of the Greatest Irish Sport Achievement with 60% of the vote, with the performance of the Irish Paralympic Team at London 2012 taking the 2nd spot with 12%. The Paralympics also secured 2nd place in the category the sporting event in 2012 that provided the most positive image of Irish Sport with a vote of 21%. The Olympics on 40% won this category. Recognition Commenting on the results of the SSI, Paralympics Ireland CEO, Liam Harbison commented:
“We’re delighted that the outstanding achievements of the Irish Paralympic Team in London have been recognised by the Public in this way. The success of the athletes coupled with extensive games coverage has catapulted Paralympic sport into a new reality and greater opportunities.  We intend to capitalise on this great legacy from London 2012.”
