Classification
Paralympic athletes are grouped for competition according to the type and extent of their disability
Sailing
In Paralympic Sailing, three medal events feature one, two and three sailors per boat, respectively. All events consist of nine separate races (usually out and back) with one point for first, two for second, etc. The winner is the sailor or team with the lowest points total at the end of the nine races.
Classification
Athletes compete in three mixed events: the single-person, two-person and three-person Keelboat competitions. The design of the keelboats provides greater stability, and the boats have open cockpits to allow more room for the sailors.
Irish interest
John Twomey has qualified for an amazing tenth Paralympic Games at London 2012 along with his Sonar crew mates Anthony Hegarty and Ian Costelloe. Competition will take place in the testing waters of Weymouth Bay on the south coast of England.
